Often wondered what happened to THX? Watched hundreds upon hundreds of movies in THX at a local cinema from the early to mid ‘90s. Also, owned my own THX Ultra 2 home setup.
Thanks for this video.
I have a set of Logitech surround sound speakers that I bought that have a THX badge on each speaker and the sound great for the price, not bad for $400.
Fun fact: The 20,000-loc figure is (now) heavily misquoted. In a 2015 interview, the man himself corrected an earlier statement of his and said how the actual code written to produce the sound was about 300 lines to configure an existing sound generator and then 325 lines to actually "play" the configured generator. That said, the existing sound generator in question itself contained about 200,000 loc, ten times the (mis-) quoted figure, but those weren't specifically written for Deep Note, they were required to make the generator be a generator in the first place instead of just dead hardware.
So how does that work in the end? Do I have to get everything THX certified from, bluray player, AVR to TV and of course speakers to have that experience?
What if I use a PS5 as a bluray player which is not certified. Will it still be the same quality?
And are movies still working with THX besides Star Wars? Like from WB for example?
Fun Fact: The Fun Fact about Deep Note needing 20.000 lines of code is wrong. According to James Anderson Moorer, it´s creator, Deep Note needed 355 lines of code in the original C language and another 300 lines in the patch for a synthesizer.
Hello, I'm your fan from Indonesia 🇮🇩, great channel, videos and informations man, BTW, I just want to ask, please kindly put subtitles/captions in your video 🙏 And thank you for this wonderful channel, love it everybit
THX stopped being THX the day Lucasfilm sold them to Creative.
rip klipsch thx 7.1 ex that was the last great receiver settings they had
THX isnt as good i had a setting on my new onkyo and it wouldnt let me ajust bass treble and the older one is way better dont ever buy a phone with thx its snake oil and maybe their theaters are good but home theater recievers with thx setting it sounds muffled unlike the older pioneers i had a pioneer it was the best one i ever had it was from 2007 or something so around 2012 was when recievers got cheap so now does he mean outdated as in blown ive seen newer speakers that still look old and have paper cones sometimes older is better it usually is but speakers are alot better they just need to make recievers better without naking them super expensive you think re eq would make the effects in a thx move have less treble so some people like me like there speakers timbre matched sounds like ancient car spakers in the back without tweeter and front ones have em man thx really has went down too much focus on gaming headsets and benq projectors dont even have that big of speakers and theres no sub at least ive neverseen one there cinemas and klipsch speakers are the only two good things they have and i bet there car audio is some of the best too phones with dolby atmos are snake oil too and they actually sound bad no matter how you ajust them thx phone audio might be better especially with klipsch headphones or earphones
thx isn't relative anymore and besides how many actually have the professional THX in the home ? except me of course
So cool! Thank you THX for developing a standard step of audio integration for at home entertainment!
I really miss that deep note when putting in a movie. One of the prequel Star Wars movies had a pretty neat one back in the day the one with lightning from the surrounds. That blew me away!
Own by thx
Thanks for this video, which is a good summary of what THX was and currently is.
Personally, I think the times have changed to such a degree that THX has kind of made itself obsolete.
In the early years, the idea was to set a higher standard for movie payback that allowed the audience to see & hear what the creators intended you to experience. So seeing a movie in a THX certified theater gave you that " guarantee". This was usefull as the quality of the picture and sound varied quite a bit among theaters, at that time.
When THX started certification for consumer electronics, it was also very useful, so you knew that your THX-certified equipment was properly suited for the task of optimal playback of movies at home. Again, this made perfect sense as the equipment that was available, varied greatly in quality and potential.
However, in the following years THX started to lower their standards for the home. First only "THX" existed as the "seal of excellence". This was later re-branded as THX Ultra and a lower-spec THX Select was introduced, so manufacturers (and THX) could put the THX logo on more and more devices, simply by lowering their standards (which undermines their own philosophy that quality should come first).
Meanwhile, technologies evolved and more and more companies already surpassed the standards of THX quite some time ago. In my personal view, THX has lowered their standards to such a degree, that it has become obsolete or is but a shadow of it's former self.
Just for reference :
I've watched and heard many films over several decades. Both in THX and non-THX theaters (with 35mm, 70mm, 70mm IMAX and digital 2K and digital 4K laser projection) and in home cinema's (on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and Bluray). I've enjoyed the first Dolby Digital 5.1 presentations, the first DTS presentation, all the way to current Dolby Cinema (Atmos).
George Lucas started ILM and THX and Star Wars? Legend
I hear it almost everytime a watch a movie! My favorite movie theatre is THX certified and one of the best in Sweden. Actually its probably one of the best i've been to in the world having traveled alot in US.
I remember seeing a poster of THX at The AMC KABUKI 8 theatre 🎥 in San Francisco in the late 80’s or early 90’s thinking it was a sequel to THX 1138 😁fond memories. 👏
I MISS THX‼️
You get to see Tex at 8:17!
THX has a mascot named Tex, a red robot who first appeared with the premiere of Independence Day in 1996!
THX has a better sound on DVDs it makes it a great crystal-clear sound the way how it was but came out in theaters. High-definition sound. Changed everything Home Video Entertainment
This is another great vid. Been in the cinema industry for 27 years. I was THX certified back in 2007 while working as a cinema tech; still am a cinema tech. 2nd vid I’ve seen from you guys and just great info for anyone wanted to learn about the industry.
Loved THX. Saw countless great titles in a THX certified Theatre near my old home. Loved picking up THX certified Laserdisc, DVD and even a few Blu-Ray and was running off my own THX Kef 7.1 Surround EX system. Come back THX to the masses please 🙏 Great video. Thank you for this
I only buy thx certified equipment. I love thx. It always sounds amazing!
What do you think of Disney putting marvel films in imax enhanced on disney+? Is this the future of home cinema? Is the living room where Disney is aiming for?
hey man could you please do a video if you should see The Batman in IMAX 🙏??
But why aren’t theaters THX certified anymore?
I remember THX back in the day
excelente video como siempre… no me acuerdo si te pregunte… hablas español?
we use to have it at Cinemark XD in my town but they always turn down the volume and didn't have masking on the screen. So it was not a very good presentation. I have it on my Onkyo but it doesn't do 7.1.4 on Dolby Atmos it just goes up to 7.1 they are away cutting corners.
Thx Changed the Dimension of Home Cinema Sounds Something Special
Cool
